ALU is honoured and privileged to partner with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) through African Leadership College (ALC), its first campus set up in Mauritius. GCU and ALU are set to be collaborators and co-creators in the development of ALU, a network of world-class tertiary education institutions. Through this partnership, the ALU community will learn from GCU’s longstanding commitment to providing excellent, high quality and innovative tertiary education.
GCU is one of Scotland’s largest universities with nearly 17,000 students. It is regularly ranked among the UK’s top 10 modern universities and became the first and so far only modern Scottish university to be ranked among the top 400 universities in the world in 2010. Nobel Peace Prize awardee and Founder of the Grameen Bank, Professor Muhammad Yunus leads the University as Chancellor and supports GCU in its efforts to develop students who will find solutions to some of society’s most pressing challenges.
In 2013, the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency ranked GCU as Scotland’s second best university in terms of employability among graduates and 11th best in the UK. According to Destination of Leavers of Higher Education in the UK, 96.2 percent of GCU graduates are in employment or further study six months after graduation. This is exciting as it aligns with ALU’s mission to develop students who have real world skills upon graduation.
GCU will provide quality assurance and work with ALC Mauritius to ensure that the standards of academic excellence, innovation and a phenomenal student experience are among the world’s best institutions. Through the partnership, GCU will award internationally recognised degrees to ALC students which will allow students to pursue further study anywhere in the world. ALU is particularly excited about the opportunity for ALC students to study and learn at GCU.
GCU is known for its exceptional faculty and admirable culture of recognising students and staff as not only participants in education but partners in the educational process. In 2013, GCU was ranked second in the UK for international student satisfaction, a recognition that is in line with its global mindset. ALU is confident in GCU’s ability and interest in upholding the African context in the partnership.
Professor Pamela Gillies CBE, GCU’s Principal and Vice Chancellor sits on the ALU Global Advisory Council and will advise ALU and its management team in the making of key long-term strategic decisions.
